Ulrik is my first foray into time-travel fiction. I’m going to add that it could be considered a time-travel romance. However, there is so much action and adventure in this book that I hate to limit it by a simple genre description.
This book has been in the works for many years. I wrote it about five years ago and picked it up last year to see if it was in publishable condition. I went through a bunch of rewrites and clarifications and after a successful beta read, I think it is a spectacular story. I can promise that you have never read anything like it before. Typically, I try to stay away from common fantasy themes and ULRIK is no exception. That could be said of many writers, but for me, it is one of the goals I have when I sit down to write.
Another goal of mine is I try to stay away from foul language in my writing. Have you ever noticed; one person’s swearing is another person’s normal conversation?
Recently, I was dinged by a reviewer has having swearing in my book because I had one word in the book (a word which in another context can describe a female dog). As a result, the entire book was classified as “containing bad language”…one-word mind you, one, just one in the whole book. I’m not going to lie, that hurts because it was intended as a negative toward the entire book and the story itself was not highlighted. I guess it is a case of that reviewer throwing the proverbial baby-out-with-the-bathwater but to each their own.
That review caused me to be more aware of my content and dialog and I hope resulted in a change for the better. Of course, I am always open to constructive criticism because it makes me better at my craft.
